Spiritual Growth
Abiding in Christ
By Well From The Rock
Overview
Jesus said "remain in me and you will bear much fruit." This study explores what it means to abide—staying connected to Jesus through Scripture, prayer, obedience, and community—and why it is the foundation of all spiritual growth.
Key passages
John 15:1-8 – "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."
Colossians 3:16 – "Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom."
Psalm 1:1-3 – "Blessed is the one … whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season."
Philippians 3:8-10 – "I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord."
1 John 2:6 – "Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did."
What it means to abide
**Abiding is staying, not striving** – The branch does not produce fruit by effort; it produces fruit by staying connected to the vine. Our role is to remain; God's role is to produce.
**Abiding happens through Scripture** – Psalm 1 paints the picture: the one who meditates on God's Word is like a tree planted by water. Roots go deep before fruit appears.
**Abiding happens through prayer** – Prayer is the ongoing conversation that keeps us connected. It is not just asking for things; it is being with Jesus.
**Abiding happens through obedience** – "If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love" (John 15:10). Obedience is not legalism; it is the natural response of love.
**Abiding happens in community** – Colossians 3:16 says the word of Christ dwells among us "richly" as we teach and encourage one another. We abide together, not alone.
Questions for reflection
- What does your daily rhythm of connection to Jesus look like right now? Is it more "striving" or "staying"?
- When have you tried to produce spiritual results in your own strength? What happened?
- How does the image of a vine and branches change the way you think about spiritual growth?
- What is one way you could deepen your abiding this week?
Action plan
- Read John 15:1-17 on Bible.com and underline every time Jesus says "remain" or "abide."
- Choose one spiritual discipline to practice consistently this week: daily Bible reading, prayer, or silence.
- Identify one relationship where you can practice "abiding in community"—a small group, a friend, or a mentor—and invest in it.
- At the end of each day, ask yourself: "Did I stay connected to the vine today, or did I try to do it on my own?"
