Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening

Overview

Prayer is not a monologue—it is a conversation. This study explores how God speaks through Scripture, the Spirit, and stillness, and how to cultivate a posture of listening.

Key passages

1 Samuel 3:10 – "The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, 'Samuel! Samuel!' Then Samuel said, 'Speak, for your servant is listening.'"

Psalm 46:10 – "Be still, and know that I am God."

John 10:27 – "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me."

Isaiah 30:21 – "Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, 'This is the way; walk in it.'"

Romans 8:26 – "The Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans."

How God speaks

**Through Scripture** – The Bible is God's primary voice. When we read it prayerfully, the Holy Spirit illuminates specific truths for our situation.

**Through the Holy Spirit** – The Spirit guides, convicts, comforts, and prompts us. Learning to recognize His gentle leading takes practice and community.

**Through stillness and silence** – In a noisy world, God often speaks in the quiet. Psalm 46:10 is not just a command to relax—it is an invitation to trust and to listen.

**Through other believers** – God uses wise, trusted friends and mentors to confirm what He is saying. Never rely on "hearing God" in isolation.

Questions for reflection

  • When was the last time you felt God was speaking to you? How did you recognize it?
  • What noise or busyness in your life makes it hard to be still and listen?
  • How can reading Scripture become less of a task and more of a conversation with God?
  • Do you have a trusted friend or mentor you can talk to about what you believe God is saying?

Action plan

  • Set aside 10 minutes each day this week to sit in silence with your Bible open and ask: "Lord, what do you want to say to me?"
  • Read 1 Samuel 3 on Bible.com and notice how Samuel had to learn to recognize God's voice.
  • Write down anything you sense God may be saying and share it with a trusted friend for confirmation.
  • Practice "lectio divina" (divine reading): read a short passage slowly four times, pausing to listen after each reading.
