Overview

Jesus gave His disciples—and us—a prayer that covers worship, surrender, provision, forgiveness, and protection. This study walks through each line of Matthew 6:9-13 with reflection questions and an action plan.

Key passages

Matthew 6:9-13 – "This, then, is how you should pray: 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.'"

Luke 11:1-4 – "One of his disciples said to him, 'Lord, teach us to pray.'"

Psalm 145:18 – "The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth."

Walking through each line

**"Our Father in heaven"** – Prayer begins with relationship. God is not a distant deity; He is our Father. We come with confidence and intimacy.

**"Hallowed be your name"** – Before we ask for anything, we worship. We acknowledge who God is—holy, set apart, worthy of reverence.

**"Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven"** – We surrender our agenda to His. Prayer aligns our heart with God's purposes, not the other way around.

**"Give us today our daily bread"** – We depend on God for provision—not just food, but every need. The word "daily" teaches us to trust Him one day at a time.

**"Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors"** – Receiving God's forgiveness and extending it to others are inseparable. Unforgiveness blocks the flow of grace.

**"Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one"** – We ask for protection and strength, acknowledging that we are in a spiritual battle and cannot stand on our own.

Questions for reflection

  • Which line of the Lord's Prayer is hardest for you right now? Why?
  • How does starting with "Our Father" change the way you approach God compared to starting with a request?
  • Is there someone you need to forgive before you can freely receive God's forgiveness?
  • What does it look like for you to ask for "daily bread" instead of worrying about tomorrow?

Action plan

  • Pray the Lord's Prayer slowly each morning this week, pausing on each line.
  • Choose one line that challenges you and journal about it for 10 minutes.
  • Ask a friend or family member to pray the Lord's Prayer with you and discuss what it means to each of you.
  • Read Matthew 6:5-15 on Bible.com for the full context of Jesus' teaching on prayer.
