Overview

What does it mean to trust God when you can't see what He is doing? This study explores Abraham, the Israelites, and Paul to understand faith as daily obedience in the face of uncertainty.

Key passages

2 Corinthians 5:7 – "For we live by faith, not by sight."

Hebrews 11:1 – "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see."

Genesis 12:1-4 – "The Lord had said to Abram, 'Go from your country, your people and your father's household to the land I will show you.' … So Abram went, as the Lord had told him."

Proverbs 3:5-6 – "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

Romans 10:17 – "Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ."

What faith looks like

**Faith is not the absence of doubt** – Abraham questioned, the Israelites grumbled, and even John the Baptist asked "Are you the one?" Faith is choosing to trust God in the middle of uncertainty.

**Faith is obedience before clarity** – Abram went before he knew where he was going. Faith often means taking the next step without seeing the full path.

**Faith grows through Scripture** – Romans 10:17 tells us faith comes from hearing. The more we immerse ourselves in God's Word, the stronger our trust becomes.

**Faith is communal** – Hebrews 10:24-25 says we should not give up meeting together. Faith is strengthened and sustained in community.

Questions for reflection

  • Where in your life right now are you being asked to trust God without seeing the full picture?
  • When has stepping out in faith—before you felt ready—led to something good?
  • How does reading Scripture strengthen your faith in practical terms? Can you name a specific passage that has anchored you?
  • Who in your life encourages your faith? How can you invest in that relationship?

Action plan

  • Identify one area where you are leaning on your own understanding instead of trusting God. Write it down and pray over it daily this week.
  • Read Hebrews 11 on Bible.com ("the hall of faith") and choose one person whose story encourages you.
  • Take one step of obedience this week that requires faith—something you have been putting off because the outcome is uncertain.
  • Share your step of faith with a friend and ask them to pray for you and check in.
